چکیده

A very rapid decrease in heterozygosis is naturally indicated in the formative period of the breed (studied in Shorthorn cattle7'8). But even after large numbers are reached the average rate of decrease per generation in 6 breeds including cattle,8"l0 horses,9 sheep'0 and swine'0 is about 0.5%, equivalent to 25 as the effective number of sires per generation. It is probably also true in nature that the effective population number may be very much smaller than the actual number, making the effect considered here an important one in the life of the species. 1 Jennings, H. Changes in recombination frequency following inbreeding in Schizophyllum.

NBREEDING has been shown to affect several linkage relationships in NeuroI spora (STADLER and TOWE 19.62, TOWE and STADLER 1964, LAVIGNE and FROST 1964, CAMERON, Hsu and PERKINS 1966, NAKAMURA 1966). These changes in frequencies of recombination can be regarded as manifestations of the genetic control of the crossing-over process; alternatively, they can result from structural changes which inc...

On the determination of recombination rates in intermated recombinant inbred populations.

The recurrent intermating of F(2) individuals for some number of generations followed by several generations of inbreeding produces an intermated recombinant inbred (IRI) population. Such populations are currently being developed in the plant-breeding community because linkage associations present in an F(2) population are broken down and a population of fixed inbred lines is also created. The ...

Effect of selection against deleterious mutations on the decline in heterozygosity at neutral loci in closely inbreeding populations.

Transition matrices for selfing and full-sib mating were derived to investigate the effect of selection against deleterious mutations on the process of inbreeding at a linked neutral locus. Selection was allowed to act within lines only (selection type I) or equally within and between lines (type II). For selfing lines under selection type I, inbreeding is always retarded, the retardation being...

Computing Inbreeding Coefficients and Effects of Inbreeding, Heterosis and Recombination Loss on Evaluations for Lifespan and Somatic Cell Count in the UK

A recent study on the Holstein/Friesian (HOL) breed has indicated that the rapid rise in percentage Holstein genes in the United Kingdom (UK) has been accompanied by an increasing rate of inbreeding (Kearney et al., 2004). They reported an average inbreeding rate of 0.17% per year since 1992. Some of the consequences of inbreeding, for instance, inbreeding depression, are expected to be more pr...

High inbreeding, limited recombination and divergent evolutionary patterns between two sympatric morel species in China

As highly prized, popular mushrooms, morels are widely distributed in the northern hemisphere, with China as a modern centre of speciation and diversity. Overharvesting of morels has caused concern over how to effectively preserve their biological and genetic diversity. However, little is known about their population biology and life cycle. In this study, we selected two sympatric phylogenetic ...

The advantages of segregation and the evolution of sex.

In diploids, sexual reproduction promotes both the segregation of alleles at the same locus and the recombination of alleles at different loci. This article is the first to investigate the possibility that sex might have evolved and been maintained to promote segregation, using a model that incorporates both a general selection regime and modifier alleles that alter an individual's allocation t...
